Hopefully most of us will never experience a car accident. Or
if we do, perhaps it will be a minor fender bender. But if you do end
up having a car collision, here are some things you should keep in mind.
If the car is drivable, pull off the road a short distance to the berm
so oncoming traffic will not be impeded. Make sure no one in the car is
seriously injured. If there are signs of significant problems, such as
an injury that is bleeding heavily or someone who has become
unconscious, perform first aid or life-saving techniques, but do not
move the person, especially if there is a chance of a broken bone or
spinal cord.
Use a cell phone to telephone 9-1-1 for help. If there is no cell phone
available, walk to the closest house and ask to use the phone. If the
situation is more urgent, flag a passing vehicle and ask the driver or
a passenger to call the police or paramedics.
When the situation is stable, exchange insurance information with the
drivers of other involved vehicles. Wait for the police to come and
take a full report.
Keep everyone in the car off the road, but if there is a chance of the
car’s exploding or catching fire, get everyone out and keep them at a
safe distance. Stay calm. Do not argue with the driver of the other
vehicle. When the police arrive, cooperate by providing complete
details of the incident. Be truthful if you were driving under the
influence of illegal substances or if you lost control of the car.
Always carry comprehensive auto insurance in case of an accident. Be
sure that your policy offers towing assistance, which can be expensive
otherwise. Keep proof of insurance on hand at all times.
